Authentic Spicy Pico de Gallo Recipe

One thing, which many of us associate with Mexican cuisine, is salsa. There are a lot of different types of salsa (which is in fact, simply the Spanish word for "sauce"), ranging across a wide spectrum of flavor profiles and with heat levels from incendiary to completely non-spicy, despite what many people have come to assume whenever they hear the word salsa.

Pico de Gallo is one of the most popular types of salsa, finding many fans across the world. It is a great accompaniment to almost any Mexican meal and of course, it is a classic along with tortilla chips, tacos and other popular Mexican dishes. This Pico de Gallo recipe turns up the heat a little bit, with jalapeno peppers giving this salsa its distinctive kick. However, heat is not the only thing going on in this salsa; the flavors of tomatoes, cilantro, onions, and lime come together with the heat of jalapenos to make this a salsa, which even those who are normally, a little reserved about spicy dishes can love.

You can also adjust the level of heat in this Pico de Gallo recipe by simply increasing or decreasing the amount of peppers used or if more heat is what you are after, by substituting the jalapenos with the slightly hotter Serrano pepper. It is a very flexible recipe, so do not be afraid to experiment and find a variation, which works, for you and your dinner or party guests.

1 medium white onion, diced
1 lime, juiced
3 tbsp cilantro, chopped
1 jalapeno (or Serrano, to taste), minced
Salt to taste

Preparation:

So how do you make Pico de Gallo?

It is actually one of the easiest recipes of all. Simply chop and combine your ingredients in a bowl, mix thoroughly, cover and refrigerate.

Allow it to sit for a few hours if possible to let the flavors blend - though it is also fine to prepare this Pico de Gallo recipe and serve it right away, if needed.

However, it does so easy to make that you can prepare this recipe ahead of time and let it sit overnight in the refrigerator, which will allow its flavors to really shine.

(Serves 4, but feel free to reduce or multiply the recipe as needed.)
