Do you like guacamole? Chances are that you do (especially since you're reading this right now) and while many of the commercially available brands of guacamole are quite good, there's simply no comparison to fresh homemade guacamole. For instance, you know how much better the guacamole from your favorite Mexican establishment is in comparison to what you can pick up at the grocery store.
However, there's just one thing stopping you from enjoying your very own guacamole - you've never made it before and aren't sure how to make it. As it happens, it's actually very easy to make and the results are fantastic. If you've always wondered how to do it yourself, this easy guacamole recipe will get you on your way towards making some truly memorable guacamole in your own kitchen.
The ingredients are basic - avocados, tomatoes, onion, Serrano chilies, cilantro, lime juice and spices. However, the combination is much more than the sum of its parts and once you've made this easy guacamole recipe, you'll never want to go back to premade.
Ingredients -
4 avocados, peeled and seeded
1 medium Roma tomato, diced
1 small red onion, diced finely
1-2 serrano chilies, minced (may be seeded for a milder flavor)
¼ cilantro, chopped
Juice of 3-4 limes
½ tsp cumin
Salt and pepper, to taste
Preparation:
One thing which is key to a good batch of guacamole is perfectly ripe (but not overripe) avocados. Ideally, the fruit should be soft enough to mash with a potato masher or in a mortar and pestle - if it's much firmer than this you can either use a food processor or simply wait a day or two for the avocados to ripen.
Start by peeling and seeding the avocados and mashing them with the lime juice (the acidity of the juice will prevent your guacamole from browning from oxidation). Chop the other ingredients and mix together, then season to taste with salt, pepper and additional lime juice, if desired. Serve at once or refrigerate, tightly covered for use within a day or two.
