Turkey chili recipes make a change from chili con carne recipes. Since "carne" is the Spanish word for beef or steak, this is one of our chili recipes without the carne. The ground turkey is very flavorful and goes beautifully with the other ingredients in this rich, thick, and mouthwatering chili recipe. The chilies, onion, garlic, tomatoes, and kidney beans are traditional ingredients and the chicken broth suits the flavor of the turkey.
The Guinness adds an earthy richness to the overall dish, which makes it fuller, bodied, rather like one of the traditional chili recipes with beef, although you will not be able to distinguish the flavor of Guinness in the finished dish. Serve this delicious turkey chili with grated cheese, sour cream or chopped onions, or even all of those. A wedge of lime is also great for squeezing over the chili and infusing it with authentic Mexican flavor.
Many people have never made or eaten turkey chili recipes but if you have some turkey to use up (maybe after thanksgiving!) why not make some turkey chili recipes instead of the turkey curries, turkey sandwiches and random "turkey surprise" dishes your family usually gets? This meal is guaranteed to be a hit and you can serve it over rice to make it even more filling. If you thought that chili had to be made with beef, think again, because in the following recipe the turkey really gives the chili plenty of flavor and turkey is also lower in fat than beef, which is another reason to make this dish.
Ingredients -
2 cans crushed tomatoes
2 cans diced tomatoes
1 onion
3 cloves garlic
3 cans red kidney beans
1 chipotle pepper plus 1 tablespoon chipotle juice from the jar
1 can Guinness
2 lbs ground turkey
1 tablespoon cumin
2 chopped jalapenos
1 teaspoon black pepper
½ container chicken broth
1 ½ tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons canned green peppers
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
½ cup grated Mexican blend cheese
1 lime, cut into wedges
Preparation:
Heat the oil in a big pot, then brown the ground turkey.
Add everything else to the pot and bring the chili to a boil.
Turn down the heat, then cover the pot and simmer it for 45 minutes or until the liquid is thick and reduced and the beans are tender.
If the liquid does not seem to be reducing, you can uncover the pot and simmer for 10 more minutes.
Serve this turkey chili recipe with the grated cheese and lime wedges.
