Chili con Carne with Chocolate

Chili con carne translates as "chili pepper with meat" and there are many variations on the Mexican chili con carne theme including chili mac, which is chili con carne with macaroni. You might have tried making chili con carne recipes using hamburger meat or ground chicken or turkey. There are many variations and you can adapt existing recipes if you want to alter the type of meat or the vegetables it contains, as well as the spices and seasonings.

The following recipe for chili con carne con chocolate is perfect for a dinner party because the flavors are so delicious and perfectly balanced. Also, you simmer it for an hour and a half so if you have people coming over, you have plenty of time to be getting on with other things or finishing off your appetizers, or dessert while this chili con carne with chocolate cooks itself.

This tasty Mexican recipe combines chunky beef, vegetables, chili and chocolate, as well as herbs and spices for extra flavor. You might think that sounds an odd combination but rich chocolate goes surprisingly well with savory dishes and just as nicely with the flavor of chili. After all, the Mexicans like to add chili to their candy so why not add chocolate to their meat recipes!

Savory Chocolate Chili con Carne

Ingredients -

2 tablespoons oil
2 lbs blade pot roast, in big chunks
2 carrots, peeled and chopped
3 onions, peeled and chopped
1 cup beef broth
28 oz can whole tomatoes
3 potatoes, peeled and chopped
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon dried oregano
2 oz 70% dark chocolate, chopped
2 heaped spoonfuls cocoa powder
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 dried ancho chili pepper, seeded and chopped
Salt to taste

Preparation:

Dry the beef well with paper towels and heat a big soup pot over a medium high heat. Add the oil. When it starts to smoke, add a layer of beef. Sear the beef all over.

You might have to do this is a few batches, depending how big your pot is. When all the beef has been browned all over, put it all in the pot.

Add the potato, carrot, and onion. Add the tomatoes, broth, ancho chili, cocoa powder, and spices.

Stir well, season with salt, and bring to the boil.

Lower the heat and simmer for an hour and a half or until the beef is tender and the broth is thick.

Stir in the chocolate and serve hot with rice.
