Steak sandwiches are almost a no-brainer. After all, they are something that pretty much everyone likes and they make a quick, easy, and popular lunch or dinner for just about any occasion. Whether you are having a few friends over for lunch, having a cookout or just throwing together a quick snack for yourself, a steak sandwich always goes over well.
Better still is a Mexican steak sandwich, such as this carne asada torta recipe. Here, we have grilled skirt steak or flank steak on a crusty bolillo roll with mayonnaise, avocado, tomato, lettuce, onion and jalapeno, served with lime wedges and spicy salsa verde.
It is a recipe which is hard to top. Even though this will take you all of five minutes to throw together, do not be too surprised if this is the dish that your family asks you to prepare for them time and time again. Tortas are easy, yes - but easy can be great and this recipe is all the proof you could want.
Ingredients -
1 lb grilled skirt steak or flank steak, cut into thin strips
4 bolillo rolls
Sliced tomatoes
Red or green leaf lettuce
Sliced red onion
Sliced avocado
Slices of pickled jalapeno (optional, but recommended)
Mayonnaise (Mexican mayonnaise if you can find it)
Salt and pepper, to taste
Lime wedges and salsa verde, for serving
Preparation:
Slice the bolillo rolls lengthwise and toast if desired.
Spread each with a little mayonnaise, sprinkle with a pinch of salt and black pepper and top with avocado and tomato slices, a few lettuce leaves, jalapeno slices, and steak.
Serve with a wedge of lime and plenty of spicy salsa verde on the side.
Tortas are one of the easiest Mexican recipes to make. After all, they are just sandwiches, albeit with a south of the border twist. If you have fresh baked bolillo rolls on hand, then tortas are a natural choice anytime you want to prepare a quick meal or a snack. As a side note, see our bolillo recipe if you would like to take things to the next level of deliciousness by baking your own rolls. Especially on fresh bread, nothing beats a steak torta made with creamy avocado, fresh tomato and lettuce and spicy, tangy pickled jalapenos and salsa verde. Try it and you may never crave a plain steak sandwich again.
